Language Learning Can Create Success With Love, Work and Family

(ARA) – Success with love, work and family often depends on people, literally, speaking the same language. Yet research from Rosetta Stone Inc., a company that specializes in language learning, indicates that while 75 percent of Americans have studied foreign languages, half of them still only speak English.

Americans who speak another language often benefit from this knowledge. Whether it’s finding the perfect job abroad, making a new friend, or even falling in love with someone from a foreign country, knowing how to communicate in the same language can open up new worlds for people.

For example:

* Travel: In 2005, 63.5 million travelers went abroad, according to the Department of Commerce. More than half traveled for leisure and 45 percent visited friends and relatives.

* Income: People who speak at least one foreign language make about $10,000 more per year than those who only speak English. About 17 percent of those who speak at least one foreign language earn more than $100,000 a year.

* Education: Nearly half (47.5 percent) of American workers who hold bachelor’s or higher degrees speak languages other than English at home.

* Relationships: The U.S. population included 33.5 million foreign born individuals, or 11.7 percent of the population in 2003, according to the U.S. Census.

“The world is truly becoming a ‘global community’ as the population grows more diverse and technology makes international communication and travel increasingly accessible to average Americans,” says Pamela Mulder, of Rosetta Stone Inc.
